I’m Learning to Stop Apologizing for Having Fun

I recently played in the woefully under advertised Pelgrane Press’s annual online convention, PeliCon. As far as I can tell the convention was a success and I had a a ton of fun! It has also helped rejuvenate my resolve to get back after what I consider a severe lack of creative progress. I mean when you add ear infections and daily bouts of vertigo episodes on top of burnout then it wasn’t really that bad…

BUT I am the captain of my ego ship and I feel bad capital B for not tending more closely to my projects. The thing I always need to remember is the sheer number of hats an independent creator wears means the work is never done. If the haberdasher has laid it on too thick, you need to take a break!

In the last month here are the tasks I have accomplished

  • Wrote, playtested, and formated a Goblyn Market Affair for a contest.
  • Playtested a month long saga for Legends of the Khurst Riders.
  • Wrote and rewrote 6 playable characters for LofKR.
  • Send notes about incoming art
  • Reformatted and updated the Christmas Carol affair for Goblyn Market for publishing.
  • Reformatted and updated a historical affair for Goblyn Market for publishing.
  • Played a game of Mutant City Blues for PeliCon

Why do I feel like I haven’t done anything?

The month-long playtesting took up the majority of my time because that also include writing and rewriting as we played. Maybe I secretly attach a non-work vibe when I say, ‘I have a game tonight’? Is it because I feel what I do for a part-time job isn’t jobby enough? Am I trapping myself in my own stigma about playing games?

Well, yeah. I need to realize that everything is progress. Playing the game I’m creating is a part of my work. Is it fun? Hell yeah! Or the game I’m working on needs more work until it is.

I need to stop apologizing for having fun. And yes, it IS work. I spend just as many hours writing in notebooks, reviewing rules, reading other games, and designing layout (blech!) as I do playing games.
